One issue that concerns me when it comes to technology is the pace at which it changes. The programs and software that we learn about today may change or become completely obsolete within a short period of time. There is always going to be something new. How as teachers do we keep up with the changing technology?

Aside from those currently growing up with contemporary technology, computers have not come easily to most. Programs lacking the ‘user-friendly’ touch can easily frustrate those who were here before today’s high-speed software. We, as humans, are somewhat unpredictable, and generally have no patience for our smart phones when they aren’t so smart. People are technology’s greatest barrier. They are generally resistant to change and new things. With that resistance, coupled with any imperfection that any given technology may have, and most programs generally do, most will find themselves raving about their hatred for computers.

Education is one of many areas that is seeing changes in its system and the way it functions because of technology. As society becomes more and more technological advanced, the education system has to keep adapting and up to date with these new advances. I had some experiences with these changes during my senior year of high school. I had been taking an animation class for the last two years of high school, and the last year the software we used to create 3d modeling and animation was updated to the most recent one. While we, the students, were having difficulties using the program and trying to understand how to work it, our teacher was also having a few difficulties considering he himself had not used the program either. He would purchase books and work along with us and try his best to assist us with these new programs.

Some barriers I face with technology when applied to art is that I was not brought up in a school that was big on using computer programs to make art. I didn't take art in high school at all, and took only one business computer class, so I was not exposed to programs to create art until college. I can use phones, iPads, laptops, etc. fairly well, however, when it comes to really exploring programs to their full potential I don't have experience. This could definitely be an issue I face when teaching art. Kids are integrating technology into their lives at a much earlier age, and much more frequently than they did when I was growing up. I will have to put more effort than I typically would, in to learn as much as possible and stay up to date with new programs for the student.

I think one of the biggest barriers to art in technology is that it cost a lot of money to start making computer art. For a school on a low budget providing a room full of computers loaded with adobe programs isn’t an easy task especially since there isn’t huge emphasis on funding computer art in public schools. Individuals can save up for a computer and software, but that’s still a several hundred-dollar investment up front. It’s easy to see why some people may choose to pay their rent instead of starting computer art as a new hobby. Unfortunately, libraries are also at the low end of state funding so to provide a free resource for the public to create computer art can be very difficult.

After reading Ch.16 and learning the complications that copyright laws can inflict on the art classroom it seems that I,as a teacher, will need to be educated on what boundaries I can or cannot push. Teachers need to be able to give their students creative freedom and not constantly have to dampen their concepts and talents with laws and restrictions. As with all technological advances, it comes with the positive and the negative. While we have access to more information and images we also have created more laws and boundaries that corporations and governments feel need to be imposed on the consumer. I would think there is going to be the fear of the consequences of crossing those boundaries but also feeling the need to cross them for art and education's sake.

Something that could be challenging is the amount of personal time educators with years of experience will have to invest so theyd be able to adapt to growing technology. Will their district fund for trainings or conferences? If not, it will be up to the instructor to incorporate technology into assignments. And traditional methods are familiar, therefore comfortable.

I'd also lump in learning curves and hurdles in with "Barriers". As an art educator funding will be a big hurdle we will most likely face; thus effecting access for our stds and potentially prolonging the learning curve. The fast moving, ever evolving nature of tech. we as educators have to get hands on exp ourselves and try to stay relevant. Staying relevant to the youth coming up behind us will really help make the personal connections needed to keep it interesting. Really the children are teaching us in many ways. Software will continue to evolve and make art making using technology more interesting, simple and intimate for the user. Finding balance between tradition and technology will be key..imop.

Technology, to me, has changed absolutely nothing about the teaching art. If anything, it's just another medium for artist to express themselves. A computer is just another blank canvas waiting for an artist hands. Computers require a certain set of skills just like a printmaker or a sculpture or a painter. Technology can never be a barrier to art because art isn't bound by physical limitations, it's bound by the mind and hands of it's creator. The only new innovations that can be brought to the world of art are the new minds and imaginations of thosewho are brought to the doorstep of self expression.
